Light the Night for Leukaemia - Sep 18
LET’S LIGHT THE NIGHT FOR LEUKAEMIA
The call is out for the people of the far north to help create a sea of twinkling lights along the Cairns Esplanade on 18 September as we Light the Night to reflect on the impact blood cancers have across the community.

An initiative of the Leukaemia Foundation, the event aims to raise awareness of the Foundation’s mission to care and vision to cure, and to give leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma patients and their families an opportunity to gather together on one night and share inspirational stories.

The evening will start with entertainment and presentations from affected community members, followed by a twilight walk along The Esplanade carrying specially lit helium balloons. Each balloon will have a special meaning with participants lighting a gold balloon to remember a loved one lost, a white balloon to celebrate survivors, while supporters will light a blue balloon to give hope.

Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland Chief Executive Officer, Peter Johnstone, said he was delighted to introduce an event that brought together the community with patients and their families living with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood disorders.

“Light the Night will be a very positive and uplifting experience and we hope that community members from Cairns and surrounding regions will join with us to show their support, and contribute to the spectacular sight of hundreds of balloons lighting up The Esplanade,” Mr Johnstone said.

“With five Queenslanders diagnosed with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma or related blood disorders each day, many community members are touched in some way and know of someone affected, whether it’s a family member, friend or colleague.”

“I encourage people to spare a few hours of their time on 18 September to help us create a large and moving tribute to remember, celebrate and give hope. Individuals or teams can register for the event at www.lightthenight.org.au or by calling 1800 500 088.”

Mr Johnstone said Light the Night was destined to become a very special event on the Cairns calendar.

The Leukaemia Foundation is a not for profit organisation that provides free counselling, accommodation, transportation and practical assistance for patients and their families. The Foundation also funds research into cures and better treatments for leukaemia and the related disorders. Receiving no ongoing government funding, the Foundation relies on the continuous support of individuals and corporate partners to expand its services.

Light the Night will commence at 5pm at Fogarty Park, The Esplanade.

Additional details about Light the Night can be obtained from Annette Jarrett from the Leukaemia Foundation in Cairns on 07 4041 1454.
